Designers Jewellery :: Jewellery Gold Ornaments

The sum of the parts - putting the findings together
As jewellery is essentially a body ornament, the part of the body where the jewellery is to be worn determines the shape and design of the piece. If the piece is purely gold metal than like a sculptor the jewellery designer has to visualize whether to remove the seen parts to reveal their own vision or melt the metal down and cast it. This saves the whole process of having to repeatedly anneal the metal to soften it and make it more pliable and easy to work with.

Annealing is to heat the metal and then quench it in water: the metal is then cleansed in acid or Aqua Regis a combination of acids and water.

If there are stones to be set than mounting the stones in an appropriate mounting and setting has to be decided and created so that the stone stays when worn. So the findings as the parts of the jewellery are referred to, have to be decided and put together.

Setting of gem stones is a tedious and laborious process involving intricate craftsmanship and skills. The metal is then shaped creating holes or spaces where the stones are to be set and requires the jewellery designer to handle, form and drill the metal, to give it the desired shape. The setting of the stones is an intricate and precise process requiring very acute and minor adjustments in the metal to fit the stone.

Sometimes very miniscule pieces have to be filed and shaped to fit the stone precisely. It is therefore little wonder that the dentist and the jeweller have common materials and tools that they use for their craft.
