Indians prominent in the diamond trade

India is a leader in diamond jewellery as Mumbai has replaced New York, Antwerp and Tel Aviv as the largest diamond, trading center in the world. Indians have also ensconced themselves as reliable diamond trading partners and are well established in centres outside India such as New York and Antwerp.

However in recent years the big South African diamond cartels have been given stiff competition by Russia, West Africa and Australia.

But the sparkle of the diamond is being threatened at first by synthetic or American diamonds and now by lab processed carbon subject to lasers to convert carbon blocks into diamonds. In fact some companies in the US advertise that the bones of the dearly departed may be converted into pristine diamonds in a lab by adding carbon and subjecting the same to lasers.
